The Houston Independent School District serves the student population of River Oaks with students being zoned into River Oaks Elementary School, Lanier Middle School, and Lamar High School. Students may also attend any of the private and parochial schools located near River Oaks. Once students graduate high school and are ready to attend college, University of Houston, University of St. Thomas, Rice University, and Houston Community College-Midtown Campus and West Loop Center Campus awaits them.
The community is home to the members only River Oaks Country Club, known for hosting the River Oaks International Tennis Tournament sine 1931. Several more tennis tournaments would soon be held at the country club afterwards. The country club also includes its own golf course designed by famed golf course designer Donald Ross. Residents have access to several municipal parks near River Oaks, including Mary Elliot Park, Ella Lee Park, Sleepy Hollow Park, and Del Monte Park, among many others. River Oaks Park and River Oaks Community Center are both operated by the city of Houston.
